Developmental Edit

Are you ready to take your manuscript from good to extraordinary? Unlock the full potential of your story with a developmental edit.
As a fiction editor trained in writing craft, I understand the intricate art of storytelling. We'll go beyond the surface-level edits to dig deep into the heart of your manuscript, unraveling its true brilliance.
Beyond technical expertise, I believe in fostering a supportive and collaborative relationship with authors, understanding their creative vision and working alongside them to achieve it.
Together, we'll embark on a journey to refine and enhance your storytelling, resulting in captivating narratives that resonate with readers.
Do I Need a Developmental Edit?
A developmental edit will benefit your manuscript if...
You've finished the first draft, or you're struggling with something in your story that's stopping you from finishing the first draft
You're seeking feedback or guidance on the overall structure, plot, character development, pacing, and other foundational elements of your work
You want to gain an outside perspective, identify areas for improvement, and elevate your storytelling abilities
What's Included in a Developmental Edit?
Each developmental edit includes two forms of feedback: editorial comments that are included in the manuscript document, as well as an editorial report which is a separate document
Editorial Comments
A developmental edit includes comments within the manuscript through Microsoft Word's Comment feature.
These comments provide feedback and point out examples of places where the story can be enhanced or issues can be addressed
Editorial Report
The editorial report summarizes and clarifies the main areas for improvement in the manuscript, as well as actionable steps to help the writer resolve those issues.
What manuscript issues does a developmental edit address?
A developmental editor focuses on the elements of story craft to bring the novel to life. These include:
Plot, structure, and pacing
Character motivation and development
Backstory and worldbuilding
Point of view and narration
Tropes and genre expectations
Story conflict and building tension
Theme, mood, and tone of the writing
Telling versus showing
